British Values
Promoting British Values
Here at Alumwell Nursery we promote British Values to lay the foundations to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain. We have a duty to actively promote the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs or none.
At our nursery we are in the process of writing a clear strategy on how we are going to embed these values and show how effective it is for our children. This will form part of our Social, Moral, Spiritual and cultural policy (SMSC).
It is proposed in our strategy that children will have a developing understanding of:
-
How decisions are made and have a part in making decisions in our setting by encouraging children to have a voice and to listen to others.
-
The freedom to have faith and beliefs that may be the same or different to other people and these will not be the cause of prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour.
-
Identifying and combating discrimination amongst their peers and the wider community.
Supporting the Strategy
As part of our curriculum, all children and their families are encouraged to celebrate customs from a variety of cultures and faiths including Chinese New Year, Christmas, Divali, Eid and Easter.
Children are encouraged to talk about their families and share objects from home. Photographs of children’s families are displayed around the nursery.
Objects that reflect home life are used in the nursery by adults and children especially in the home corner and role play areas to promote cultural acceptance.
Our snack area offers children the opportunity to prepare and eat healthy snacks from around the world.
Parents are encouraged to share their views on the nursery. We have a complaints policy for parents, visitors. Governors and staff to access.
We adhere to Equality Duty 2010 (revised 2014) and we have a behaviour and anti bullying policy to promote positive behaviour.
